It has been a while since Nissan announced that it will be bringing in the LEAF EV, but after a lot of waiting, the Japanese brand is finally making a move towards electrification. Nissan was one of the first mainstream manufacturers to make a full EV available to the masses, and come May 9th, the company will make waves as the first mainstream brand in the country to offer such a car.
The LEAF is currently in its second generation. The first generation also made history as one of the first mass-market EVs available at affordable prices. The launch is scheduled for May 9, 2021, at 2:00 PM on Nissan Philippines’ Facebook page and YouTube channel.
As to its design, we know that the LEAF will still use the current generation exterior styling that we’re all familiar with. Nissan has been teasing the arrival of the LEAF for some time now, attending trade shows and other events last year with the EV on display. As expected of a future-thinking vehicle, the front will have LED headlights DRLs, and fog lamps on a sleek face with Nissan’s V-Motion grille adorning the front. The charging port will also be located right above the grille. The LEAF will only be available as a hatchback. Its rear lights are akin to that of the Juke, but feature a more mature look. Apart from that, we get a spoiler and more hits of gloss black on the rear hatch.
Specs-wise, sources claim that the LEAF will get a 40 kWh battery. Electric motor output with this battery is rated at 148 hp, and torque figures stand at 320 Nm. There are more powerful options in other markets, but it seems unlikely that the LEAF Plus will join the lineup. As to the specs of the upgraded model, we’ll get a 62 kWh battery with 214 hp if this variant sees the light of day—we won’t hold our breath, however.
Prices for the LEAF may be closer to the P2,000,000 without incentives. We’ll find out if Nissan Philippines was able to bring the price down on May 9 since this is a zero-emissions vehicle.
