Nissan revives the Terrano nameplate as a PHEV

At Auto China 2026, Nissan unveiled two concept vehicles that are expected to be part of their future lineup. One of those concepts is a once beloved name here in the Philippines, its the Terrano. What makes this revival even more exciting, the Terrano concept is production-ready and will be powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. 

If the name rings a bell, that’s because the Terrano was sold here in the Philippines before as an SUV version of the Hardbody pickup truck. The rough and rugged Terrano made its mark as a competent off-roader that can also live civilian life. 

That was long ago, now, the Terrano name has been in retirement for a while now, at least until Auto China 2026. Full mechanical specs haven't been confirmed yet, but the Terrano will likely borrow the Frontier Pro's dual electric motor setup, good for 408 hp and 800 Nm of torque. Being a PHEV, expect somewhere around 135 km of pure EV range on the CLTC cycle. 

The Frontier Pro's five-link rear suspension and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, which handles torque distribution between the axles automatically, are also likely carried over. Same goes for the electromechanical rear differential lock, which is a proper bit of off-road kit.

Nissan's official line is that the Terrano "is equipped with the latest plug-in hybrid technology and builds on Nissan's off-road heritage while addressing the dual needs of outdoor adventure and urban commuting." That tracks with what’s been revealed.

On the outside, the design language is confident without being over the top. The upright front end and short overhangs give it a purposeful, no-nonsense stance. Bumpers come with integrated skid plates and tow hooks, and the approach and departure angles look genuinely capable. Up front, rectangular LED lights dominate the face, with yellow auxiliary lights mounted on the hood and along the front of a futuristic roof rack adding some character. Around back, a spare tire is mounted behind a body-colored panel with Nissan badging, and a ladder gives you roof access. It's a handsome design overall, but for the production version, expect it to come without the extra off-roading kit.

The Terrano wasn't the only reveal at the show. Nissan also brought out the Urban SUV PHEV concept; a cleaner, more pavement-focused take on the same plug-in hybrid formula. That one is aimed squarely at younger Chinese buyers, with smoother bodywork and no prominent front grille.

Interior shots haven't surfaced yet, but the production Terrano will likely draw from the Frontier Pro's cabin, seeing as they will also likely share a powertrain.
