Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) forged a partnership with MAPUA University’s Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (MME) Department by jump starting its Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Campus Tour series. MAPUA University was the first school in Toyota’s tour. The Japanese brand gave students and faculty a look at the benefits of HEV technology through symposiums and test drives carried out throughout the day. The Prius and Prius C were the two units that were being featured by Toyota, and both units served as the centerpiece of MAPUA’s Engineering Week in the event’s opening day.
Our goal is to raise public awareness on the advantages of using HEV technology. There is no better way to start the advocacy than with our future engineers and craftsmen, who will shape our tomorrow.
The symposium was conducted by Toyota’s technical experts from its manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna. Three sessions of the hour-long symposium discussed the environmental impacts of emissions from various energy sources, all while mentioning how the Prius nameplate contributes to minimizing the industry’s carbon footprint.
A short test drive for the Prius C hatchback was also held. Test drives were accompanied by a Toyota technical representative in order to answer any questions that testers would have about Toyota’s HEV.
Through these activities, students were able to experience, first hand, the advantages of driving an HEV. The synergy between the gasoline engine and the electric motor gave students an insight to the benefits and engineered characteristics of the system.
The HEV tour will also be conducted in other Universities such as the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and De La Salle University (DLSU).
