The 2023 Mazda CX-8 has been a long time coming. Unveiled at the beginning of January 2021, Mazda’s mid-size crossover is now starting to arrive in Southeast Asian markets.
The ASEAN version of the CX-8 is by and large the same as the one revealed in Japan. It gets an updated grille, additional chrome trim, and new 19-inch alloy wheels. Mazda also introduced two new color options: Polymetal Gray and Platinum Quartz Metallic.
Of course, the new star of the show is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. It’s the same power plant found on the CX-5, delivering 228 hp and 440 Nm of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, exclusively on the turbo model.
Non-turbo variants remain available, equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter mill 192 hp and 258 Nm of torque. These models are front-wheel-drive and also feature a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Mazda also furnished the new CX-8 with a host of new interior features, including ventilated red nappa leather seats. Other new tech features include wireless Apple CarPlay, onboard wireless charging, and a frameless rear-view mirror. The CX-8 is available in either a six-seater or seven-seater configuration, depending on the variant.
Mazda’s driver-assistance suite, i-ACTIVSENSE, also receives upgrades with all-speed adaptive cruise control and full speed autonomous emergency braking. Previously available safety features such as the 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams continue to be available on the new CX-8.
The 2023 Mazda CX-8 will first become available in Malaysia, where it is also produced. Mazda Malaysia and Mazda Philippines share the same distributor, Bermaz, so prospects are high for the new CX-8 to reach our shores. As for when, the upcoming Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) might offer the perfect stage for the Mazda CX-8 to show off its new look and features.
