Held at the Clark International Speedway (CIS) last March 28, the 3rd leg of the 2015 National Drag Racing Championship (NDRC) Northern Series saw an intensified mid-season action, as Vanni Garcia and William “Bill” Hand emerged the quickest in the field.
Garcia and his W-Autosports/Vannitec Racing Mitsubishi Cyborg made a strong comeback to dominate the Quick 8s. In spite of a detuned engine, the Cyborg’s new front-end aero kit and drivetrain refinements took Garcia to the line in just 9.362 seconds. Last round’s champion William Hand settled for 2nd place, following a jump-start on the final heat.
After his “Tiunami 1” GT-R suffered yet another technical problem early in the day, JCT-Blanche’s Jonathan Tiu had to borrow his teammate’s Honda Integra to compete in the Quick 8s. Tiu managed to clinch 3rd place with the clock stopping at 11.540 seconds.
Meanwhile, excitement ensued in the Super Pro Class, as Hand and Garcia went on to out-drag each other, resulting to a very close “best of 3” duel. Hand took the lead in heat 1, but due to his failed start in heat 2, Garcia brought the battle to a tie. In the 3rd and final heat, both men broke out of their dial-in times, but because of a quicker reaction time, Hand emerged as the winner.
In the Pro Class, RSL Motorsports’ Martin Manalo took 1st with a quick 12.206 second run. Closely behind was John Rizya in the “Thunder” Camaro, and claiming 3rd was Kenneth Bayani, on-board his Mohspeed Toyota corolla. As for the Expert Class, TEMZ Automart’s Arvin Millet won the round with a 12.589 second run, followed by Boy Francisco in 2nd, and Von Allen Ilagan in 3rd.
The race weekend also had a great Sportsman Class battle. Lennel Diaz took lead, but was in for a close call, as Jannery Millet almost out-dragged him. Winston Lloyd Ang then went on to round things up in 3rd place. Finally in the highly-contested Hot Street Class, it was an easy victory for Terenz Hormillosa, as his opponent Harly Calubiran ran a red light. Benok Licudine took home 3rd.
The NDRC heads back to Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC) for the 3rd leg of the Southern Series on April 11, 2015.
The 2015 National Drag Racing Championship is sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) and sponsored by M&H Tires, Sparco, GT Radial, and Aguila Auto Glass.
