A new hero SUV has arrived in China, the Dongfeng M-HERO M817 Max+. The M817 Max+ is the latest model under Dongfeng’s M-HERO line of rugged SUVs. Measuring 5,100 mm long, 1,998 mm wide, and 1,899 mm tall with a 3,005 mm wheelbase, it is built to compete with other full-size off-road SUVs. Off-road numbers look promising, with a 31-degree approach angle, 20-degree breakover angle, 31-degree departure angle, and 237 mm ground clearance. It can also wade through water up to 820 mm deep.
Inside, buyers in China can choose from three interior colors: Pine Ink, Mountain Grey, and Danxia Brown. The cabin is fitted with the brand’s HarmonySpace 5 smart cockpit system, aiming for a modern and connected driving experience. Under the hood, the M817 Max+ uses a plug-in hybrid setup with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with electric motors. Combined output reaches 505 kW, equal to about 677 hp, with 848 Nm of torque. It carries a 50.4 kWh CATL Freevoy battery, giving it up to 215 km of electric-only range under the CLTC cycle, while the total driving range can reach about 1,365 km when using both fuel and electric power.
The SUV also uses a two-speed longitudinal 11-mode PHEV system with a distributed decoupled four-wheel-drive setup. Drivers can choose from fuel, pure electric, range-extended, and plug-in hybrid modes, along with nine driving programs to match different terrains and road conditions. For driver assistance, the M817 Max+ comes with Huawei’s Qiankun intelligent driving system ADS 4. It includes Navigation Cruise Assist (NCA), full-scenario parking assist, and a total of 27 sensors: 11 HD cameras, three 4D millimeter-wave radars, one 192-line LiDAR, and 12 ultrasonic radars.
Dongfeng has not shared any plans to sell the M817 Max+ outside China for now. But with more Filipinos looking for big plug-in hybrid SUVs and off-road-ready rides, it could be a good fit if the brand decides to enter the local market.
