Xiaomi’s second car revealed as 681 hp crossover

Smartphone maker Xiaomi is making another move into China’s highly competitive EV market with the announcement of its latest model, the YU7 SUV, which will launch in the summer of 2025. Xiaomi’s SU7 EV sedan, launched earlier this year, took many by surprise. First, for its impressive build quality and remarkable performance, and second, for showcasing that a smartphone brand could excel at making cars. The SU7 was so impressive that even Ford CEO Jim Farley praised it, having used it as his daily driver.

The Xiaomi YU7, a previously unannounced vehicle, was revealed through homologation filings submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). In China, all vehicles must undergo regulatory approval before entering the market. As part of this process, the MIIT releases a monthly list of applications, which includes production images and specifications of vehicles yet to be officially launched. This is how we first learned about Xiaomi's debut car, the SU7, as well as Chevrolet’s latest-generation Equinox for the Chinese market. 

Coinciding with the reveal of MIIT’s list, Xiaomi officially unveiled an official photo of the YU7 for public consumption, pretty sweet. The YU7, an all-electric SUV, features a design closely resembling the SU7 sedan, Xiaomi's inaugural electric vehicle introduced earlier this year. Size-wise, the YU7 measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase and a curb weight of 2,405 kg.

Powering the YU7 are dual electric motors: a 220 kW motor at the front and a 288 kW motor at the rear, delivering a combined output of 681 hp and enabling a top speed of 253 km/h. The vehicle will use a lithium NMC battery supplied by CATL, although the battery’s capacity has yet to be disclosed. This means we know how fast this crossover goes, we just don’t know for how long.

With the YU7’s official launch scheduled for next year, we can anticipate the full specifications to be revealed on or just before the launch date. Given the instant success of the SU7 sedan and the upcoming arrival of the YU7, could Xiaomi’s cars make their way to the Philippines too?
