It’s needless to say that midsize pickup trucks in the Philippines have become lifestyle vehicles and commanding workhorses from, well, just workhorses. It’s definitely a trend, not only in our country but also abroad. We even have the SsangYong Musso, which is a pickup truck that’s reverse-engineered – developed from its SUV counterpart rather than the other way around.
However, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak Biturbo begs to differ from the norm. With the myriad of convenience features found inside the truck, I was hard-pressed to call it a workhorse, if not for immense payload and towing capacity.
Here’s a closer look at the range-topping Ranger’s technology and safety offering, packaged in a P1,695,000 price tag.
Breaking the norm on tech
First of all: Adaptive Cruise Control. How often is it that you’ll find radar technology being used in a pickup truck? The Ranger Wildtrak Biturbo has that, and it works seamlessly, just the same as it works in the Everest Premium Package.
It’s also a cinch to use on speedways. Just set your desired speed and forget about it. It will do the legwork for you, stopping and accelerating when needed. By scanning up to 64 vehicles at a time, it can adjust the car’s speed and position just enough to make you feel safe. Even better, the technology also comes with the following: Lane Keeping Assist system, Blind Spot Monitors, Adjustable Speed Limiter, Forward Collision Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
The Ranger Wildtrak Biturbo also has Active Park Assist, which parks the car for you on both parallel and perpendicular parking spots. It works fine, as well, although it can’t detect tricycles and motorcycle when parallel parking, so you would need to be careful with that.
Of note, this is the first pickup truck in the Philippines to have these technologies, and that’s on top of the already-overflowing tech features you’ll find inside the Ranger, such as automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, SYNC 3 infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front and rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera, power-adjustable driver seat, and speed-sensing door locks.
As the top-of-the-line variant, the Ranger Wildtrak Biturbo is filled with passive and active safety features. Airbags are basically present throughout the truck’s cabin (dual front, two sides, two curtains), along with Electronic Stability Program with Traction Control, ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passenger, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and hill start assist.
While the things I mentioned above are already a mouthful, that’s only on top of the radar and sensor technologies mentioned in the previous section. Let that sink in.
