Pickup trucks have a very specific formula to make it big here in the Philippines; they need to be tough, look tough, and most importantly, they need a torquey diesel engine. That was true years ago and remains true today. But modern pickups have evolved from being straightforward workhorses into versatile lifestyle vehicles. Many owners now use them as daily drivers in the city, then take them off-road on weekends. The segment has become almost synonymous with the work-hard-play-hard mentality.

Enter the BYD Shark 6 DMO. With its body-on-frame chassis paired with a hybrid powertrain, it presents itself as a truck designed for both city dwellers and weekend adventurers. But can it match—or even surpass—the proven formula of traditional pickups? And are there any drawbacks hidden beneath its impressive spec sheet? We set out to find the answers in this review.
Price
Before anything else, let’s take a look at where the Shark 6 DMO stands against its rivals in terms of price. The lineup starts at P2,098,000 with the Shark 6 DMO Advanced and tops out at P2,298,000 for the Shark 6 DMO Premium. The trucks it has to face off against consist of the Toyota Hilux 2.8 Conquest 4x4 at P2,364,000, the Nissan Navara 2.5 PRO-4X 4x4 at P2,220,000, the Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 Athlete 4x4 at P1,992,000, and the Ford Ranger 2.0 Bi-Turbo Wildtrak 4x4 at P2,340,000.
Among top-spec pickup trucks, the BYD Shark 6 DMO lands squarely in the middle of the price ladder. It’s neither the most affordable nor the priciest option in the segment. In that sense, its pricing is quite reasonable, all things considered.
Powertrain and Fuel Economy
Under the hood of the Shark 6 is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with dual electric motors, forming an advanced all-wheel-drive hybrid system. Together, they produce a combined 430 hp and 650 Nm of torque, providing plenty of muscle to haul their 2,710 kg mass.
BYD’s 29.6 kWh Blade Battery sits at the core of the setup, enabling up to 100 km of pure electric driving. When working in tandem with the hybrid system, the total range stretches to more than 800 kilometers, which is more than most diesel engine-powered trucks can eke out even with a gentle foot. However, BYD did its own testing and achieved 1,114 km on the North Luzon loop on a full tank and battery, which is even more impressive. As for us, in hybrid mode with a low charge, we managed to get 12 km/l in the city during heavy traffic. Do remember, however, that because it’s a PHEV with an electric-only range of 100 km, it is possible to travel around the city without ever using the gasoline generator.
In addition to the impressive fuel economy, the Shark 6 DMO also has a V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) function, which means you can run appliances on it even out in the wilderness. While this feature isn’t necessarily new, having it on a PHEV provides much more confidence because you won’t have to worry about running out of juice thanks to the generator. Plus points then for its lifestyle truck cred.
Exterior
The BYD Shark combines rugged utility with modern flair, sporting sharp LED headlights, a bold, upright grille, and pronounced fender flares that give it a commanding stance. It rolls on chunky all-terrain tires, 18-inch alloy wheels, and boasts ample ground clearance, making it well-prepared for semi-tough trails and uneven terrain. Practicality is also baked in, thanks to a powered tailgate and a reinforced bed equipped with multiple tie-down points, useful whether you’re hauling gear for work or packing up for a weekend adventure.
Payload Capacity
Speaking of the bed, the Shark 6 DMO offers 1,200 liters of cargo space. However, because it carries an engine, a battery pack, and two electric motors, its payload capacity tops out at 800 kg. This is one of the trade-offs compared with its rivals; most mid-size pickup trucks boast payload ratings of 1,000 kg, or even higher.
That said, many pickup owners rarely come close to maxing out their truck’s load capacity unless they regularly haul heavy cargo. The same will likely be true for the Shark 6 DMO. Still, its lower payload rating means owners will need to be a bit more mindful of how much weight they’re loading into the bed.
Interior and Tech
Step inside the Shark 6 DMO and you’ll find a cabin that feels more premium SUV than traditional pickup. Both the Advanced and Premium variants use leather upholstery paired with soft-touch panels, giving the interior a more upscale, polished feel. In our experience, the rear seats are arguably one of the best bench seats in the pickup truck segment. We say that because in our experience, being seated at the back, even on a 300 km long drive, didn’t feel exhausting at all. Amenities at the back include rear air vents, bottle holders by the doors, an array of cubby holes, two USB charging ports, grab handles by the door pillars, a center armrest with two cupholders, and a pair of map lights.
Up front, the cockpit is clean, well-appointed, and robust. Key features include a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster that is crisp, bright, and provides all essential information at a glance. Beside it sits BYD’s rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. As with other BYD models, the air-conditioning controls are only accessible through the touchscreen, but steering wheel and center console buttons provide quick access to drive modes and A/C controls.
The steering wheel also hosts controls for audio volume, hands-free phone use, and adaptive cruise control, along with a handy button to activate the 360-degree camera. Cabin storage is plentiful, with cubby holes scattered throughout, and the overall build quality feels solid. The front seats are comfortable and well-bolstered, though they sit quite high, even for a high-riding pickup, which could be a consideration for those who prefer a lower seating position.
Performance and Comfort
First things first, the 430 hp and 650 Nm of torque of the Shark 6 DMO allow it to absolutely rip from a standstill. Instant torque from the electric motors and the continuous power delivery get it up to speed in mere seconds. Overtaking, or accelerating to the speed limit, is absolutely effortless because of its raw muscle. In addition, all that power comes without any drama or sign that it’s coming, from slow-moving traffic up to 100 km/h, the Shark 6 DMO remains whisper quiet.
On the topic of comfort, it excels here as well. Bumps, ruts, and even unpaved trails are handled beautifully by its coil spring suspension. We’re confident to say it’s one of the more comfortable pickup trucks to ride and drive, save for the more serious machines like the Ranger Raptor and the more premium American full-size trucks. In addition to the comfortable ride, NVH insulation is done well, keeping road and tire noise from creeping into the cabin. Even when the engine comes to life, the truck remains quiet and composed.
Verdict
The Shark 6 DMO won’t be the truck to sway hardcore pickup truck fans or off-roaders out of their diesel trucks, where rugged simplicity is king. But for crossover owners craving a vehicle that can confidently leave the pavement behind, it’s a compelling choice. It’s equally appealing to pickup owners ready to trade their diesel workhorse for something more cutting-edge and modern.
On the road, the Shark 6 DMO impresses. Sure, it has a few quirks—like slightly lower payload capacity and minor interior inconveniences—but in nearly every other area, it shines. It packs plenty of power, delivers remarkable efficiency, and balances daily usability with weekend adventure readiness. As a lifestyle pickup, it’s not just good—it’s hard to beat.
