5 value-packed subcompacts under P500k that could be your next car

If you’re shopping for a brand new car, a tight budget doesn't mean you have to compromise on features, comfort, trunk capacity, or style. What you need is a subcompact.

These are the small 4- or 5-door cars you see driving around on the road that occupy about half the footprint of an SUV. Yet, they can still fit around 5 adults (or 4 healthy ones) and boast modern features without breaking the bank.

But with dozens to choose from, we’ve narrowed down the list to the 5 value-packed subcompacts under P500,000 you’ll find in AutoDeal. This will definitely help you – whether you're planning to buy one soon or you're just curious because you find them cute.

Hyundai Eon 0.8 GL MT (P438,000)

Its low fuel consumption of just 20.8 km/l – thanks to its 814 cc engine – makes this car a popular choice among AutoDeal customers. However, its deficit in engine size is compensated by the 215 L trunk and cargo capacity, which is the 2nd largest on our list. Making U-turns would also be easier for the Eon with its turning circle of just 9.1 m, the tightest among the group. If you want a colorful subcompact, then the Eon is perfect for you with its 10 color variants.

Toyota Wigo 1.0 E MT (P458,000)

The Toyota Wigo is another choice that suits the trend. It's the largest on our list when it comes to dimensions especially the wheelbase. The larger wheelbase of 2,450 mm will more likely give you a bigger legroom. Its 1.0 L engine is also one of the strongest as it can produce for up to 65 hp and 85 Nm of torque. Safety airbags comes with the Wigo – one of the two among the group who has one – which is quite expected from a company known for its safety standards. And since it’s a Toyota, you won't fall short for parts and services if you'll be needing one.

Suzuki Alto 800 Deluxe (P438,000)

The Alto 800 is Suzuki's smallest vehicle in their model line-up. In fact, it has the smallest engine on this list with only 798 cc. Although it’s way better now with the power steering, it’s still less powerful since it can only produce 47 hp and 68 Nm of torque. However, if you're in for a long drive, tag 3 friends along as Alto 800 can take you as far as 700 km with just 1 full tank. Its low fuel consumption of 20 km/l and big fuel tank capacity of 35L makes this car fairly competent among the bigger subcompacts on this list.

BYD F0 G-i MT (P468,000)

This market-sophomore Chinese subcompact might not be the first thing that comes in your mind when you talk about small cars – but it doesn't mean that it's a bad choice. The BYD F0 has features that are not present on the other cars on our list. This variant comes standard with a smart key and a push button engine start. Its 1.0 L engine can also produce 67 hp and one of the highest pulling power of 90 Nm. And the F0 is the only car on this list that has 5-years service warranty and their own BYD Response Operation (BRO) – more like a 911 for BYD owners. Pretty cool for a car that's below P500,000.

Hyundai i10 1.1 GL MT (P488,000)

If the car’s design is not much of an issue, then this 2nd entry of Hyundai on this list is for you. The Hyundai i10 is the biggest on this list because of its 1.1 L engine and 252 L of trunk and cargo capacity. It's the strongest as well as it can max it out to 67 hp and 99 Nm of torque. Ironically though, it is the most economic among these cars as it can run 23km/l, and filling up the 35 L tank will get you to up to 833 km. It's even more efficient than its smaller brother, the Eon. It's an old model but a smart choice if you want efficiency.
