Mazda 2 Ford Fiesta hatch car comparo

Hatchbacks are one of the sought after vehicles in the local auto industry today because of their efficient engines, small size, sporty looks, and convenient luggage access. That said, this comparo features 2 of the segment’s subcompact models: the Mazda 2 Hatchback and the Ford Fiesta.

Just to be clear, we’ll be pitting the Mazda 2 Hatchback 1.5L SkyActiv V which is the model’s only variant, against the range-topping Ford Fiesta Hatchback 1.0L Sport+ with EcoBoost to get the full load of what both machines have in store.

Price

With a price of P855,000, the Mazda 2 comes out the winner in this round as the Fiesta is tagged at P905,000 - that’s a notable P50,000 price difference. For that extra amount you’ll save, you can either dress up the Mazda with dealer-optional accessories or use the money for purposes like paying house bills or tuition.

But knowing which takes this round is just a taste of things to come as there are more aspects wherein these 2 bring the game up to an almost even playing field.

Performance

Next up, we’ll check what’s under the hood. The Mazda 2 offers a 1.5L inline 4-cylinder SkyActiv-G gasoline engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode. The Fiesta, on the other hand, comes with a smaller 1.0L inline 3-cylinder EcoBoost gasoline engine with a 6-speed PowerShift automatic gearbox. Sure, the Mazda 2 has a bigger engine, but this is where it gets interesting.

The Fiesta outperforms the Mazda 2 as it can push 125 hp and 170 Nm of torque. Although the Mazda 2 has a bigger power plant, it only generates 108 hp and 139 Nm, which in real-world city driving isn’t far behind from the Fiesta’s output. But the Fiesta’s extra power can prove useful, especially when accelerating out in the open road or driving to places like Tagaytay or Baguio.

Dimension

As for dimensions, the Mazda 2 measures 4,060 mm in length, 1,695 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,570 mm. Meanwhile, the Fiesta presents length, width, height, and wheelbase measurements at 3,969 mm, 1,722 mm, 1,469 mm, and 2,489 mm, respectively. Looking by the numbers, the Mazda 2 is bigger and taller than the Fiesta. With that in mind, the Japanese subcompact hatch takes this round to lead the comparo 2 - 1.

Interior

As for the interior, the Mazda 2’s design leans towards the simpler look with only its 3.5-inch infotainment display and a few buttons serving as its centerpieces. The Fiesta, on the other hand, favors a more elaborate approach with the physical buttons and controls all laid out in a stylistic manner on the center dash. In addition, the Fiesta offers leather seats while the Mazda 2 has fabric, which is quite fair as seat comfort comes down to personal feel. But do note that the Fiesta has automatic climate control, whereas the Mazda 2 comes with manual.

Both models square off evenly in this round because their designs cater to personal tastes and preferences of buyers. Also, most of the amenities like for entertainment and smartphone connectivity can be found on both of them with just little differences to set them apart.

Safety and security

Like the previous round, this too gives both models an equal playing field. Both carry dual front airbags and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). The only difference is that the Mazda 2 adds Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) into the mix which allows for better control of the car when cornering. Both models also come with engine immobilizers and security alarms to protect them against thieves when left alone.

Verdict

With a score of 2 – 1, the Mazda 2 Hatchback comes out as the winner in this comparo. It presents a more competitive price tag and a much usable passenger space. Though the Ford Fiesta Hatchback excels more in performance, it didn’t quite stack up against the strong points of its Japanese rival as both models’ overall interior and safety/security features show an evenly-matched tally.

But in reality, both models come out of this battle in equal terms because it all boils down to you, the car buyer, on which one you prefer. If you need more power under the hood, a more engaging cockpit design, and auto climate control, you’d be willing to pay extra for the Fiesta. But if you’re good with the Mazda 2’s performance, bigger cabin, and simpler interior, then your choice is just as good with P50,000 to spare for your more important needs.
