This is sad news for WRX lovers, the 2018 Subaru WRX will retain its old platform – in other words, the upcoming model will only be refreshed.
As reported by motoring.com.au, the rumored plan about Subaru launching a new powertrain will be postponed for a while. The speculated newer version of the FA20 2.0L turbocharged engine with an electric powertrain will have to wait for another 12 months before becoming a reality.
More so, as explained by a senior engineer at Subaru, the said expectation will not happen due to the fact that the WRX was just released last year. For a full model cycle to happen, about 4 to 5 years will be needed. Unlike the all-new Impreza that has already completed its cycle, the 2018 WRX won’t enjoy the hybrid module-compatible Subaru Global Platform (SGP).
We would love to have the WRX on the new platform, because the car would be a lot better… but the 2018 will be a facelift only,” the senior engineer further added.
Furthermore, he said that it would only cause Subaru some struggle to give the WRX justice if they proceed to a last minute lifecycle change, saying it’s not the cost, rather a big process that would require lengthy efforts.
