Ferrari 488 Pista

Not one, not two, but six awards have been hooked by Italian supercar maker Ferrari at this year's International Engine of the Year Awards. That's crazy, as this is the highest number of accolades any car manufacturer has had in a year.

The six new awards brought up the total of trophies under the Italian automaker to 27, besting all other sports car company. The 3.9-liter V8 biturbo alone, dubbed as 2018's best engine in the world, took the 3- and 4-liter class. It even made it to the Performance Engine category, apart from having been nominated as the 'Best of the Best.'

The result was concluded by 68 international judges who gave 486 votes on Ferrari's V8. That's almost triple of what the second runner-up has got, which was, by the way, Porsche's 3-liter six-cylinder turbo with 198 points. It just dominated the awards, period.

“In the 488 GTB, the 3.9-litre eight-cylinder was a near-perfect example of a high-performance turbocharged engine, setting the bar so high that it swept aside rival powertrains. But redeveloped and tweaked for the 488 Pista, the best engine in the world just got better. Without doubt, we’re looking at an engineering masterclass from Ferrari. No turbo lag, beautiful delivery, raw emotion, a furious growl and so much power – this Ferrari V8 is a work of art.”

Meanwhile, Ferrari's 6.5-liter V12 also ranked among the best engines in the world. It placed third with 158 points. It even got two awards: Above 4-liter class and the Best New Engine.  The V8 engine is found under the hood of the 488 GTB, 488 Spider, and 488 Pista, while the V12 powers the 812 Superfast.

Here's a list of the 9 best engines in the world:

  • Porsche 3-liter six-cylinder turbo – 198 points
  • Ferrari 6.5-liter V12 – 158 points
  • Tesla full-electric powertrain – 149 points
  • Volkswagen 999cc three-cylinder turbo – 139 points
  • BMW 1.5-liter three-cylinder electric-gasoline hybrid – 138 points
  • Audi 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo – 110 points
  • PSA Peugeot Citroen 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo – 104 points
  • Porsche 2-liter turbo – 68 points

Meanwhile, as you may have observed, Tesla's entry was the only electric motor who made it in the list and it came right after Ferrari's V12.
