For the 6th consecutive time, Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost was again dubbed as the "Best Engine Under 1.0-liter" in this year's International Engine of the Year (IEY) awards. It has been undefeated since it was first introduced in 2012.

The engine was praised for its fuel efficiency, technology, and its combination of performance. This drove 58 motoring journalists from 31 countries to name the compact 3-cylinder 1.0L EcoBoost the best engine under the 1.0L capacity. The said Ford engine bested 35 other power units under the 1.0L category. In addition, it has 10 IEY awards including Best Newcomer and overall winner a record of 3 times under its belt.

Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost engine is offered in 100 hp, 125 hp, and 140 hp variants. It features cylinder deactivation technology that reduces fuel consumption and emission by closing the intake and exhaust valves of a particular cylinder. This is useful during short-distance cruising, where full capacity of the engine is not required.

“The baby Ford EcoBoost engine is still the best 1.0-litre, three-cylinder design around, despite newer powertrains arriving on the scene. Even more impressive is that it is the first-ever powertrain to secure its class title every year it has been nominated.”

Locally, you can find the 1.0L EcoBoost engine under the Ford Fiesta Hatchback Sport+, which can put out 125 hp and 170 Nm of torque.

The EcoBoost also comes with a 2.3L capacity – found under the hood of the 2018 Mustang, and a 3.5L that is integrated in the local-spec Explorer.
