Hyundai PH introduces GLX variant for 2016 Eon

Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), the official distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the country, has introduced a new variant for the 2016 Eon – the GLX MT. This effectively replaces the old variants of their entry-level subcompact, which used to be the GL and GLS.

In a nutshell, the GLX is a combination of the most essential features of the outgoing variants. Although some luxuries of the GLS were taken away to make it more affordable, HARI bumped up the specs to make it more desirable than the GL.

It comes with body colored front and rear bumpers, door handles, and side view mirrors that were only available in the top-spec Eon. The compromise is that the front hexagonal grille is now bare black. Otherwise, it still looks like the Eon we’ve grown to love.

Inside, the 2016 Eon GLX retains the black fabric seats and silver accents on the three-spoke steering wheel, center console, instrument panel, and door handles. The front headrest, however, are fixed instead of the adjustable ones seen on the GLS. Thankfully, the front power windows and five cup holders remain standard equipment. Audio system is a 1-DIN head unit with CD, MP3, and Aux-in connectivity.

Safety-wise, the Eon GLX doesn’t seem to have a driver’s airbag which was a standard feature to the outgoing GLS variant.

Under the hood, you’ll find the same 0.8L 3-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 56 hp and 75 Nm of torque. As always, only a 5-speed manual transmission is offered.

The 2016 Hyundai Eon GLX MT is priced at P508,000, which puts it in between the GL and GLS that were listed at P458,000 and P528,000, respectively. It appears that Hyundai is simplifying the lineup of its subcompact hatch not only to yield better unit sales, but also give customers a better deal.
