Following the successful inauguration of their new Hyundai Logistics Center (HLC) in Calamba, Laguna, Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI) also previewed their latest contender in the compact crossover segment, the all-new i20 Cross Sport.
The i20 Cross Sport combines the convenience and sporty looks of a hatchback with the go-anywhere capabilities of a crossover, hence the name “Cross Sport.” Its main highlight is its 170 mm ground clearance, giving it that advantage of tackling rough surfaces and floods. A set of side moldings, claddings, and skid plate not only make the i20 Cross Sport look mean, but also serve as protection.
Designed with Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, smooth geometric lines and gentle waves with contrasting angular details work to showcase an in-motion exterior. The hexagonal grille with chrome accents add to that energetic theme.
It will be available with 2 engine types: a 1.4L Kappa petrol with Dual MPI and Variable Intake System (VIS), and a 1.4L U2 CRDi. Power and torque for the petrol and diesel engines are rated at 100 hp and 133 Nm, and 90 hp and 220 Nm, respectively. The petrol variant will come with either a 4-speed AT or a 5-speed MT, while the diesel variant will be fitted with a 6-speed MT only.
Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS, and an impact-sensing door unlock feature, which automatically unlocks the doors upon impact for quick exit.
The i20 Cross Sport seats 5 people in comfort, with enough luggage room at the back. Storage cubby holes and 60:40 folding rear seats allow for even more luggage and accessories space. On-board entertainment is via 2-DIN Bluetooth-capable audio system with CD and MP3 playback.
HARI states that the i20 Cross Sport’s Philippine debut is expected in the second half of 2015. And when it does, it will go up against the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Chevrolet Trax.
