Mazda's new CX5 compact crossover gets more than just a facelift

The exclusive distributor of Mazda, Berjaya Auto Philippines, officially debuted the new  CX-5 after giving us a glimpse of its mid-cycle refresh at the 2015 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).

The updated CX-5 now comes in 3 variants - the 2.0L FWD Maxx, the 2.0L FWD Pro, and the 2.5L AWD Sport. The Maxx and Pro variants carry the same 2.0L SKYACTIV-G engine that can produce up to 155 hp. The AWD Sport, on the other hand, carries the most powerful engine in Mazda's arsenal with the 2.5L SKYACTIV-G engine that can produce up to 186 hp. But there's no need to worry about gas consumption as the CX-5 remains to be an economical vehicle all thanks to the i-STOP engine idling stop system.

The exterior shows a new bolder grille sporting new front and rear lighting signatures to go with full LED headlamps and foglamps. Meanwhile, the interior now features a 7-inch infotainment system with MZD Connect. This lets you connect your smartphone via Bluetooth to access your music, apps, and other personal location-based services.

Other added goodies mostly available with the FWD Pro and AWD Sport are the 8-way power leather seats for the driver, electric parking brake which replaces the traditional lever, dual-zone climate control panel, and some trim and material changes here and there.

But the biggest highlight of the new CX-5 is the added i-ACTIVSENSE technology that uses radars, lasers, and cameras to keep track of the surroundings and improve safety. This is made up of the Active LED Headlamps (ALH) and Lane-keep Assist System (LAS).

The ALH takes full control of the 4 independent LED headlight blocks. When it detects oncoming or preceding vehicles, it shuts off the lights that would impair the vision of its driver. ALH also automatically changes between high and low beam depending on speed, and illuminates corners when turning.

The LAS warns the driver by vibrating the steering wheel whenever he/she veers off the lane unintentionally at speeds over 60 km/h. It will also provide torque assistance to get the vehicle back into the lane.

Now available at P1,495,000, the FWD Pro comes with all the goodies and i-ACTIVSENSE. Want more power and better traction and get the AWD Sport that comes with the 2.5L engine and i-ACTIVSENSE technologies for only P1,695,000. But if you want to be practical, the FWD Maxx which is retailed at P1,345,000 has a 3.5 inch monitor, CD/MP3, AUX-in, USB support, all these paired with a 4-speaker sound system.

All variants are available in 5 colors: Crystal White Pearl, Meteor Grey Mica, Sonic Silver, Jet Black, and for P16,800 more you can get the Mazda CX-5 in their signature Soul Red.
