Mitsubishi Global hops onboard Philippine CARS program for continued growth

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has formally announced their participation in the Philippines’ Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) program. Their purpose is to enhance productivity, locally manufacture more vehicles, and provide more job opportunities.

The program was formed under the Executive Order No. 182 of 2015 (EO 182). It adheres to articles II and XII of the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines wherein private investors are likewise cited for economic boost, industrialization, and employment growth especially in the small and medium enterprises (SME).

As stated in Section 1 of EO 182, the CARS program is “adopted and implemented in order to attract new investments, stimulate demand and effectively implement industry regulations that will revitalize the Philippine automotive industry, and develop the country as a regional automotive manufacturing hub.”

The executive order allowed MMC to expand further into the country through their exclusive local distributor Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC). Their initial plans include spending over P4.3-Billion for manufacturing improvements including putting up a new stamping plant.

Along with this, they’ll also be eying the local production of the Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4 models at their Sta. Rosa plant in Laguna by 2017. Finally, the Japanese automaker will also invest in making room for additional manpower to go in line with all these endeavors.

Currently, MMPC’s Laguna manufacturing plant yields around 50,000 units per year. These include the production and sales of models like the Mitsubishi Adventure and L300. It also accounts for the continued sales of the Mitsubishi ASX, Lancer EX, L200, Mirage, Mirage G4, Montero Sport, Pajero, and Strada.
