Subaru Ascent concept

Subaru’s new concept is already sizing up its potential rivals as it debuts at the 2017 New York International Auto Show. Say hello to the Ascent concept, a vehicle that marks Subaru’s return into the SUV segment.

First previewed as the VIZIV-7 concept, the Ascent shows the upcoming 3-row SUV of the Japanese brand. Moreover, this concept officially replaces the Tribeca as Subaru’s large car. It is underpinned by a modified version of the Subaru Global Platform that was first introduced in the all-new Impreza.

If we look at the dimensions, the Ascent matches squarely with the Mazda CX-9 but it sits above the likes of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, Toyota Fortuner, and Ford Everest – yes, it is bigger compared to the 3 local SUVs.

The exterior of the Ascent is integrated with the brand’s ‘Dynamic x Solid’ design theme. It has sharp-looking headlights, a large grille, and a muscular bumper. Adding to the concept’s composed stance are the prominent wheel arches, roof rails, distinctive taillights, and rear spoiler.

The interior features a 2-tone theme along with a digital instrument cluster, a massive infotainment system (or what Subaru calls a flowing dashboard), and a 3-spoke steering wheel. It also has a 2+2+3 seat configuration with second row captain seats.

Under the hood will be an all-new turbocharged direct injection boxer engine. It could be mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

The production-spec Ascent will be built at Subaru of Indiana in Lafayette. It will be sold exclusively in the North American market first in 2018. With that in mind, it would take some time before the Ascent arrives in the Philippines. For now, it’s a cold war between the Ascent and its soon-to-be rivals in the local automotive market.
