Nissan GT-R/C

Nissan celebrated the upcoming launch of the Gran Turismo Sport game by creating the ultimate remote controlled (RC) car called the GT-R/C. It’s a one-off version of the famed sportscar that can be controlled by a PlayStation DualShock 4 controller within a 1-km range. Yes, a PS4 controller.

The GT-R/C is equipped with 4 robots to operate the steering, transmission, brakes, and gas pedal. A stock DualShock 4 controller is used to command the car via a wireless connection and microcomputer. Instructions are then processed by 6 other computers up to 100 per second.

Piloting the life-sized RC car is none other than GT Academy winner and NISMO athlete Jann Mardenborough, who had to ride a helicopter to stay within the 1km range. To help him get a feel for the car’s speed, a Racelogic VBOX Motorsport sensor was installed in the GT-R/C which relays data to an LCD display in the helicopter.

In the event that the operator is about to lose control of the vehicle (knock on wood), 2 people are assigned with the task to apply the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and cut the engine power.

The Nissan GT-R/C will be used in a tour in the U.K. to promote future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Watch the video below to see the Nissan GT-R/C as it goes around the famed Silverstone International Circuit, where it topped out at 211 km/h and completed a lap in 1 minute 17.47 seconds.

The Gran Turismo Sport game, which is exclusively available for PlayStation, will be released in the U.S. this October 17, in Europe and Australia on the 18th, and in Japan on the 19th.
