The record-breaking Mitsubishi Mirage Eco Drive Marathon

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) has recently concluded their highly-successful fuel economy driving event. Dubbed as the “Mirage G4 Eco Drive Marathon”, this event was held to demonstrate the fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness of both the Mirage and the Mirage G4.

Pro race car drivers and navigators like George Ramirez, Robbie Hermoso, Louis Ramirez, George Apacible, Raul Asuncion, Steve Acaya, Barry Ortiz, and Ivan Isada were among the members of this historic and record-breaking feat. With them were two Mitsubishi Mirage G4s, (one with a CVT automatic transmission and one with a manual transmission), and one Mitsubishi Mirage MT.

The Mirage G4 Eco Drive Marathon’s completion marked the first time a car manufacturer spearheaded such an event. To insure fairness and objectiveness, a representative from the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) was commissioned to supervise and monitor the entire run. The AAP representative also made sure that the cars’ fuel tanks and fuel lines were properly sealed and periodically inspected.

The event was flagged off last December at the Northpoint Alliance Motor Corp. (Mitsubishi Laoag, Ilocos Norte), and from there the fleet took the Philippine Nautical Highway route. All three cars started with their fuel tanks in full, with the objective of covering as much distance as they can over Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao without refuelling.

The fleet encountered challenging situations along the way, like passing through mountainous regions in Northern Mindanao. Also, the onslaught of Typhoon Ruby caused the team to stop for several days in Iloilo City for safety reasons.

When the coasts were clear, on they went to successfully complete the run with record-breaking results. The Mirage G4 MT racked up a total distance of 1,647.1kms in just one full tank (42 litres of fuel), while the Mirage G4 CVT reached 1,517.9kms. These figures went beyond expectations by breaking the 1,402kms record, set last 2008. The Mirage MT travelled an impressive 1,278.6kms total distance with just one full tank.

“From the moment that we thought of doing this challenge, we never had a doubt that the Mirage G4 will achieve an incredible fuel mileage,” said MMPC Vice President for Marketing services Froilan Dytianquin. “Apart from the Mirage and Mirage G4 inherent fuel efficiency, we believe that this great achievement would not be possible if not for the expertise of the drivers and navigators as well as the entire support team,” he added.

MMPC wishes to give credit to Pilipinas Shell, AVT and Bridgestone, whose zeal in partnering with them made this significant automotive event a very successful one. The integrated AVT GPS navigation system in the cars were a great help in determining the routes all throughout the travel in the entire Philippines.
