If you're one of those who own a 5.0L-engined muscle car, like the 2018 Mustang, you probably have caught the attention of the entire neighborhood because of its design and roaring engine sound. Loud thunderous V8 engines could be a huge issue, especially to people who don’t give a thing about good-looking cars.
Take it from the personal account of Ford user experience team's head Steve von Foerster. The former head of Ford vehicle engineering was said to have annoyed his neighbors after backing his Shelby GT350 off of the driveway. One of the angry neighbors found this irritating, and dialed 911 to put an end to his noisy morning habit – which is kind of unintentional.
“I love the sound of the V8, but it can be loud, and you can’t annoy people like that in your neighborhood. It sounds so cool, but I thought, ‘There has to be a way to give people more control over the engine’s sound.’”
So to spare you the morning rage of disturbed neighbors, Ford found a way to silence the monstrous 5.0-liter V8 engine inside the fastest Mustang GT in recorded history. Dubbed as the ‘Good Neighbor Mode,’ the system lets you choose to reduce the noise that your engine makes during ignition.
To give you an idea about how it works, the feature uses an active valve performance exhaust system that closes the valves. This then restricts any vibrations that create the noise that comes out of it. It can be toggled in the instrument cluster and comes with different volumes for the Normal, Sport, and Track modes to provide more customization.
