According to CleanTechnica.com, a news and analysis site of clean technology, one of the top misconceptions about electric vehicles (EV) is that they’re slow. That’s understandable because before production EVs were re-introduced in the market, the closest thing that we have as EVs are golf carts and buses – and those things aren’t on the list of fast cars.
However, Lucid dares to defy that misconception about EVs. The Californian startup company's 1st model called Air was unveiled last year, and it stirred the arena for EVs with its motor output of up to 1,000 hp. This power rating from a luxury sedan allows it to go from 0 to 96 km/h in just 2.5 seconds. Wow.
To further prove the point that EVs aren’t slow, Lucid put their baby to a speed test in a controlled environment. They even removed its speed limiter software just to show-off.
Just kidding. Watch the Air fly below:
NOTE: If this video isn't available on your mobile browser, watch it on Youtube.
As you can see, it reached a top speed of 235 mph or roughly 378 km/h. For comparison, the EP9 electric supercar from the Chinese brand NIO officially recorded a top speed of 313 km/h. As for non-EVs, the fastest recorded speed for a road legal car is 431 km/h by a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. Now, who says electric cars are slow again?
Too bad the Air is still a prototype at this point, with production to start by 2018. As it hit the showrooms by 2019, Lucid has written a promise on their blog: “While it may be the top speed achievable on that day, with those conditions, and at this stage of development for the Alpha Speed Car, it is not the final production top speed for the Lucid Air.”
Your move, NIO.
