The world’s best selling roadster is here, the all-new Mazda MX-5

For the past 25 years, the Mazda MX-5 won the hearts of car enthusiasts looking for a genuine sports car driving experience without breaking the bank. Mazda Philippines aims to continue the tradition with the all-new MX-5, featuring an entirely new design and SkyActiv technologies.

The all-new Mazda MX-5 was a project designed entirely from scratch. The engine is closer to the center of the vehicle, achieving the desired 50:50 front and rear weight distribution. A revised rear suspension design, a stiffer chassis, and reduced mass help contribute to impressive handling. Aluminum is then used in suspension components and select body panels, along with a lighter convertible top, contributes to a weight savings of more than 100 kg.

The lightweight chassis and low ride height of the MX-5 make it a very tempting weekend toy, ready to carve canyon roads and tear up the local race track.

Aimed to compete in the local market against the likes of the Subaru BRZ, Toyota 86, and Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the Mazda MX-5 retains the familiar roadster form, complemented by the new KODO - Soul of Motion design language. The MX-5 features a more muscular and curved tone, with slim LED headlights and a gaping front grille giving it a more aggressive look than previous versions. Meanwhile, the new round taillights give it a striking light signature in the dark.

Roof up or down, the MX-5 has a classic silhouette with the driver and passenger’s heads towards the rear of the car and a long bonnet stretching out in front of them. The gunmetal finish on the 17in aluminum alloy wheels oozes sportiness and gives the MX-5 more appeal.

Inside, the MX-5 features Mazda’s Human Machine Interface found on their latest models, allowing the driver to control entertainment and Bluetooth systems with a slick master dial-and-button array that displays the information on a 7in LCD touchscreen.

The MX-5 is strictly a rear-wheel drive affair, with the choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, priced at P1,680,000 and P1,860,000 respectively.

The automatic variant gets some goodies with a 9-speaker Bose sound system, paddle shifters with sport mode and leather seats. All variants carry the SkyActiv 2.0-litre, inline, 4-cylinder engine that generates 160 hp and 200 Nm of torque. Definitely not a slouch by any means, the engine gives the MX-5 a 0 to 100km/h time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 214 km/h, making it the quicker accelerating sports car when compared to its local rivals.

With its new design and competitive pricing, the MX-5 is poised to make a huge comeback with its roots still firm in the belief that a great driving experience need not require deep pockets or fancy methods of forced induction.

The original affordable and fun to drive roadster is definitely back and better than ever.
