Founded in May 28, 1936 by Ferdinand Porsche, VW’s spark began when it was asked to build the perfect “People’s Car.” And the result is what we now know today as the Volkswagen Beetle. This iconic German automotive brand has stood the test of time, has survived one of the world’s deadliest war eras, and still came out on top as one of the world’s largest automaker.
In the Philippines, Volkswagen first arrived in 1958 through it’s then-distributor DMG Inc. who sold models such as the VW Transporter, Kombi, and Beetle. The brand returned in 1996 through another importer who brought in models like the Polo Classic and Caravelle. But that too folded up soon after.
After the long absence, Volkswagen AG announced Ayala Automotive Holdings as the new distributor of Volkswagen passenger cars in the Philippines in October 2012. It was then formalized in May 2013 when Weiming Soh, President for commercial operations in Greater China/Asean, signed the importeur agreement with Fernando Zobel de Ayala, President and CEO of Ayala Corporation, and John Philip Orbeta, Chairman and President of Ayala Automotive Holdings.
In September 2013, the brand was publicly launched through an event called the “People’s Car Celebration,” showcasing Volkswagen’s latest models. Volkswagen Philippines now operates under its new official distributor Automotive Central Enterprises, Inc. (ACEI) - a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ayala Corporation.
Their line-up consists of models such as the Santana, Lavida, Tiguan, Golf GTS, and Crafter, among others.
