The Chevrolet Spark is Chevrolet’s entry to the thriving subcompact hatchback segment in the Philippines. Its refreshing exterior, interior, and price range make this car a good choice for a first brand-new car. The signature almond-shaped headlights of the Spark give it a unique look, together with the two-door hatch illusion because of the placement of the rear door handles.
Inside, the Chevrolet Spark has a clean dashboard layout, employing smaller knobs and buttons but illuminated it with LED lighting for easier control in the dark. A 7-inch touchscreen display with Chevrolet MyLink system decorates the center console and can be controlled using the buttons on the steering wheel. On the other hand, a traditional 3-inch LCD display on the instrument cluster replaced the motorcycle-inspired gauge on the previous model.

Launch
Chevrolet Philippines quietly launched the refreshed Spark in December 2018. It’s identical to the Spark sold in the United States, armed with lots of chromes and a new all-aluminum engine block. The fourth-generation model has been around since 2016 so this facelift model is a refreshing addition to the local lines of small cars.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
The Chevrolet Spark is a five-door hatchback with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The Spark in the Philippines is sourced from GM Korea and utilizes the company’s Global Small Vehicles platform. The sole engine option in the Philippines is a naturally-aspirated 1.4L gasoline mill that produces 97 hp and 128 Nm of torque, connected to either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.
Up front, the Spark sits on a McPherson strut suspension while the rear end gets a compound cranks setup. Brakes are ventilated discs up front while the rear wheels get drum brakes.

Driving Performance
In comparison to the other vehicles in the small hatchback segment, the Chevrolet Spark stood out in terms of driving dynamics during our tests. The 1.4L engine is responsive to every accelerator input, even from a standstill. For its size, the Spark is a fast vehicle.
Handling-wise, however, the Spark is just okay as the steering feels too light, which makes highway drives a bit less stable and composed. This is beneficial in city driving, though, which complements the car’s status as a small city car.
Technology Features
The Spark is one of the few small hatchbacks in the Philippines that’s equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through its 7-inch Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system. It also has a plethora of in-cabin features – the trip meter displays instantaneous and average fuel consumption, while speed-sensing door locks, auto up/down driver’s window, and heated/power-folding side mirrors add convenience to the driver.
Exterior
The Chevrolet Spark conforms to the norm within the small hatchback class – egg-shape and bulbous. Its exterior features are rather large, however, which include the sweptback headlights, compound upper and lower grille, and the bumper-integrated LED daytime running lights. Another thing that adds character to the Spark is rear door handles that are hidden by the C-pillar. All variants of the Spark gets projector halogen headlamps while the range-topper exclusively comes with LED DRLs. The top variant also gets a bigger set of 15-inch alloy wheels, as opposed to the 14-inch steelies of the lower variants.
The Spark is available in these colors: Caribbean Blue Metallic, Burning Hot Metallic, Merry Berry Me Metallic, Switchblade Silver, Summit White, Pull Me Over Red, Son of a Gun Gray Metallic, and Black Meet Kettle.
Interior
The interior of the Chevrolet Spark has a clean and unimpeded dashboard layout. It’s easy to familiarize yourself with the controls of the car plus the open feeling you get in the cabin gives you a comfortable room, in contrast with the car’s size. Materials used inside the cabin are mainly plastics and polyurethane, while the seats are covered with soft fabric. Leg- and head-room are sufficient in the back of the Spark but the sitting position is a bit flat.
Safety
For its class and price point, the Spark’s loaded with safety features. Five three-point seatbelts are available, plus the driver and front passenger get an audible and visual seatbelt reminder. Other standard safety features found on the range-topper Premier and mid-level LT CVT are dual front airbags, ISOFIX child anchors, ABS, traction control system (TCS), electronic stability control (ESC), hill-start assist (HSA), and immobilizer. The entry-level LT MT drops the TCS, ESC, and HSA.
