Five doors, more space, but less length, a hatchback, or hatch is one of the body styles commonly associated with the compact and subcompact segment of cars. In the Philippines, the hatchback is usually sold alongside a sedan counterpart as an alternative or as a flagship for the nameplate.
Developed in the 1960s, hatchbacks became popular almost a decade later in the 1970s and gets its namesake from its hatch-style fifth door. Because of the rear hatch, loading items into the cargo area of a hatchback is easy. The fifth door coupled with the vertical cargo volume make loading and unloading things a breeze. The cargo area also shares the same space as the passengers in the cabin. It is because of this extended roof that the hatchback employs a two-box design, different from the sedan’s three-box layout, and similar to the wagon’s.
Hatchbacks have a monocoque chassis which allows greater driving dynamics. The low center of gravity and compact dimensions of a hatchback allow the vehicle better chassis dynamics. Paired with the extra cargo area, and hatchbacks become a perfect tool to take out of town or within the city.
Popular models in the hatchback body style include models from the subcompact and compact class sizes. Popular small hatchbacks in the Philippines are the Toyota Wigo, Honda Brio, Suzuki Celerio, Chevrolet Spark, and Kia Picanto. Moving over to the subcompact category, the Toyota Yaris, Honda Jazz, Mitsubishi Mirage, Suzuki Swift, and Mazda2 are known in the market. One step above the subcompacts is the compact segment of hatchbacks, with popular models such as the Mazda3 Sportback, Hyundai Veloster, and the venerable Honda Civic Type R.
In 2019, notable hatchbacks that were released include the Honda Brio and Mazda3 Sportback. Expect to see a new Honda Jazz in 2020, as well as a refreshed Mazda2.
