Review: 2017 Mazda3 Sedan 2.0 SkyActiv R AT / Review
Can Mazda’s compact sedan compete with the rest of its competitors? Here’s what we think.
The new Mazda 3 sedan is the brand’s mid-level offering that’s proudly made in Japan, offering performance in a sleek, classy package. Utilizing KODO – Soul of Motion design philosophy and SKYACTIV technology, it sets a new standard for its category and clinched the 2013-2014 Car of the Year–Philippines Award by the Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI).
Inside is the new generation of Mazda’s driver-centric yet minimalist interface. An infotainment system with Commander Control in the center console for no look change in settings, leather appointments on the steering wheel, shift knob, and hand brake, and a 6-speaker sound system to be enjoyed by 5 passengers.
Safety measures include airbags, ABS with electronic brake distribution, Dynamic Stability Control, parking sensors and rearview camera, immobilizer, and child lock protection.
The Mazda 3 sedan is run by a 1.5L engine for the base model, while the others have a 2.0L engine with 153 hp and 200 Nm of torque. Each model is coupled to a 6-speed SKYACTIV transmission system. The R variant comes with i-STOP and i-ELOOP technologies. I-STOP automatically shuts off engine when it comes to a complete stop, but would be restarted once you let go of the brake pedal. The i-ELOOP, on the other hand, makes use of energy lost during deceleration, combines it into electricity and feeds back into the system. Combined, it is rated to save 10% of fuel in real world application. It's also one of the first Mazdas to be equipped with G-Vectoring Control, which improves handling and stability when cornering.
