Subaru’s refreshed WRX embodies its history of winning lineage, as it notches it up into the future with refined styling and improved performance. Noticeable on this latest refreshed model is a statement of aggressive detailing of both aesthetic and performance, packed under one metal body. Possessing a sporty 4-door sedan layout, the WRX’s aggressive styling gives a nod to its predecessor with more pronounced fender flares and side skirts that give it a wide-body look. Fearsome front styling starts with its signature hood-flushed hood scoop and a new foglamp design. A comfortable and roomy leather interior is ready to greet 5 occupants while prepping them up with the latest entertainment and connectivity technology. Plus, loads more comfort and safety features are packed inside, such as the set of Recaro bucket seats for its driver and passengers. Safety, on the other hand, is topped with dual front, side, curtain, and knee airbags. Beating within is a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-Cylinder DOHC Boxer Engine, mated to a Sport Linieartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). High levels of drivability and stability are via Subaru’s trademark Symmetrical AWD System and a sports-tuned front MacPherson Strut and rear Double-Wishbone suspension. Coupled with Subaru‘s exclusive SI-Drive Technology, experiencing that WRC feeling is a blissful treat.
Subaru launched the 2023 WRX in the Philippines on June 8, 2022. with two body styles on offer, the sedan and wagon. There is also a special-edition tS variant available for the model which can be indent ordered. The standard variants, however, will be ready to go should the dealer you are inquiring at has stock.
The WRX rides on the Subaru Global Platform and is one of the hero cars that emphasize performance. Built on a unibody chassis, the sedan or wagon rides on a fully-independent suspension system with MacPherson struts in the front and a double-wishbone set in the rear. Subaru boasts that the platform has a 28-percent increase in torsional rigidity and a 75% increase in suspension mounting point rigidity. A rear sway bar is also attached directly onto the body for added stiffness in comparison to the outgoing model that had the swaybar mounted on the subframe. This also allows the suspension to have increased travel and an improvement in handling according to Subaru. Braking power is provided by a set of sliding calipers in the front and in the rear. The front discs are ventilated for added cooling and stopping consistency, and on top of those stoppers are a set of 18-inch wheels and tire set that measures 245/40 R18 for the sedan and 225/45 R18 for the wagon.
Subaru has a new engine for the WRX series, and that is the 2.4-liter turbocharged flat boxer engine that produces 271 hp and 350 Nm of torque that can either be paired with a CVT or a six-speed manual transmission. The WRX also comes standard with Subaru's signature All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system and it also features the brand's SI-DRIVE system that features multiple drive modes as well as maps to change the dynamics of the engine.
The Subaru WRX comes with the latest and greatest tech from Fuji Heavy Industries, as expected of a flagship nameplate. The star of the show is the massive 11.6-inch portrait display touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Subaru's proprietary Starlink OS. The head unit comes standard with smartphone connectivity which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
On top of that, the model also comes with Subaru EyeSight which is the brand's suite of driver-assistance features which include the likes of adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency steering, lane departure prevention, lane centering control, pre-collision throttle management, and a pre-collision braking system. There is also a manual speed limiter, lead vehicle start alert, and the EyeSight Assist Monitor which is Subaru's way of saying a 360-degree panoramic camera system. The EyeSight package, however, is not included in the base model WRX which gets a reverse camera as a consolation.
The exterior of the 2022 WRX features a new design that picks up where the old one left off. It starts out with a pointed grille and a set of slim LED headlights, which is similar in style and shape to the current-generation Forester. Several black elements clad the trim sections of the front and rear which include a lip spoiler, sculpted fenders, and lower body cladding that meet the 18-inch alloy wheels colored in a dark metallic shade. We still see the aggressive hood scoop on the hood that accommodates the intercooler for the turbo system. All the lights on the WRX are LED, and the model also comes standard with power-folding door mirrors.
As expected of a Subaru, the interior is spartan but smart. The dashboard is dominated by the portrait-oriented infotainment display along with gauges and displays that are all centered towards the driver. The driver-centric approach indicates that the model is meant to be driven and enjoyed by the owner, while the choice of materials indicates that it's not meant to be a luxury tourer. It's a sports wagon through and through.
With the Subaru EyeSight system, the WRX prevents you from getting into an accident thanks to the active safety systems in the suite which include adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency steering, lane departure prevention, lane centering control, pre-collision throttle management, a pre-collision braking system, manual speed limiter, lead vehicle start alert, and the EyeSight Assist Monitor. On top of that, the model is also equipped with passive safety features which include traction control, stability control, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX tethers, steering responsive headlights, high beam assist and reverse automatic braking.
