The Toyota Veloz is the brand's entry into the seven-seater subcompact crossover SUV segment in the Philippines. It shares much of the same design as its Avanza stablemate but has a bolder front fascia and more advanced safety features. Like its MPV sibling, the Veloz is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine that sends power to the front wheels via a CVT. It is available in two trim levels and is being marketed by Toyota as an ideal vehicle for young professionals and those starting a family.
Launch
Launched on April 29, 2022, the Toyota Veloz slots above the regular Avanza as a premium version with more features and technology. The Veloz used to be the Avanza's top-spec variant but is now made into a standalone model for further differentiation. Additionally, it is also the first time that the Philippines will be getting the Veloz nameplate.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
The Veloz features a unibody construction for added refinement and has MacPherson struts for the front and a torsion beam suspension for the rear. Disc brakes then handle braking for this model for all four wheels, and it also gets an electronic parking brake with an auto-hold function. The Toyota Veloz, and subsequently its sibling the Avanza, roll on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, better known as the TNGA Platform. The general layout allows for safety, adequate stiffness, and modularity between models. The Veloz also get 17-inch wheels which is a step above the regular Avanza.Under the hood lies the 1.5-liter 2NR-VE inline-four gasoline engine making 105 hp and 138 Nm of torque mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
Driving Performance
Propelling the Toyota Veloz is the same 1.5-liter 2NR-VE inline-four gasoline engine making 105 hp and 138 Nm of torque from the standard Avanza. It is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), delivering power exclusively to the front wheels. While the figures are not impressive on paper, the 2NR-VE engine and CVT is tuned to help keep the Veloz in the right powerband at all times to compensate for its weight and supposed purpose, albeit a bit of a rubber-band feel of power delivery due to its CVT transmission.The Veloz is no canyon carver in the handling department due to its high center of gravity, but it is stable enough on the highways and for those out-of-town getaways.
Technology Features
The top variant Veloz V features a nine-inch touchscreen head unit with Android Auto, Apple Carplay, USB, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker audio system. Automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a push start button are also present.It also comes kitted out with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) which consists of blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams. The Veloz also has a 360-degree view camera for easy parking and electronic folding mirrors with puddle lamps.
Exterior
The front end of the Avanza features a honeycomb pattern grille and LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights (DRL's), that helps set it apart from its regular Avanza sibling. The Veloz also gets 17-inch wheels, added body cladding, and roof rails for a commanding look.In the rear, the Veloz gets LED taillights, a rear air dam, as well as a roof-mounted rear spoiler.
Interior
Featuring added luxury from the regular Avanza, the Veloz features a two-tone black and white interior scheme with fabric and leather combo seats and metallic interior trimming. Also present is a leather-wrapped steering wheel with multi-function buttons, a seven-inch digital gauge cluster, and LED ambient lighting.
Safety
The Toyota Veloz sports six airbags and Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) which consists of blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams.
It also has anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), stability control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, parking sensors, a car alarm, and an engine immobilizer.
