The Toyota Avanza is a small multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that combines practicality and cost-effectiveness in an affordable package made for the Philippines. With this, it's a popular car choice among Filipino families because of its flexibility and capabilities as a seven-seater MPV. Its new styling includes less chrome on the front grille and removed strip at the side, along with smaller and sleeker headlamps.
The Avanza gets a substantial exterior and interior design update, which include a three-tier front lighting configuration and additional reflectors at the back. Even with its large boot, more trunk space can be made by simply folding the 50:50 rear seats.
Toyota Motor Philippines offers two engine options for the Avanza—both being the new generation Dual VVT-i 4-cylinder inline 16-valve DOHC engine. The 1.3-liter powerplant is capable of producing up to 95 horsepower and 121 Newton-meter of torque, while the 1.5-liter variant can provide up to 103 horsepower and 136 Newton-meter of torque. The new engine comes with either a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.
Launch
The refreshed Toyota Avanza was launched in the Philippines in May 2019, which saw a total redesign upfront and a heavy revamp at the back. Its variant and engine lineup remains, as well as the availability of a 5-seater option with the Avanza J. The side mirror of the facelifted Avanza is shared with the Toyota Rush.
The new Avanza’s price starts at P731,000 and tops at P1,065,000.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
Just like the Rush, the Toyota Avanza sits on a Daihatsu-sourced platform. It’s powered by either a 1.3L 1NR-VE chain drive mill with Dual VVT-i that produces 95 hp and 121 Nm torque, or a 1.5L 2NRVE that churns out 103 hp and 136 Nm torque. Both engine options are connected to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The Avanza’s suspension setup is McPherson strut with a stabilizer in the front and a 4-link with a lateral control rod at the back. Front brakes are ventilated discs while the rear wheels get lead-trailing drums.
The Toyota Avanza drives like it's expected to—it gets the job done without an excessive amount of power. With minimal load, the small MPV is able to pull itself nicely but when fully loaded, the 1.5L gasoline engine needed to work harder. Moreover, the 4-speed transmission is just okay to get the work done but don't expect spirited shifts.
Handling-wise, the Avanza's steering feels too light, to the point that it feels numb at the center. This is okay within the city and partnered with its unimpeded driving visibility and copious amount of glass panels, the Avanza is easily maneuverable even in tight spaces. On mountain passes, however, you will need to be careful when tackling curves, especially that the brakes aren't its best trait.
Technology Features
As an entry-level MPV, the Toyota Avanza offers basic to intermediate tech features for the driver and passengers. Most of the lineup gets powered features such as door locks, steering, side mirror adjustments, and windows.
At the center of the dashboard, the Avanza gets a 6.8-inch WVGA display audio with smartphone mirroring. It also has CD, DVD, MP3, Auxiliary input, USB, and Bluetooth. Even better, the hands-free function can be paired up with up to two phones, while the music streaming can be paired up with five. Other tech features include a digital odometer and trip meter.
Exterior
With its refreshed model, the Toyota Avanza follows the three-tier front lighting trend that’s common among modern cars. The range-topping Veloz variant has smoked chrome grille and backdoor garnish, while most of the variants get LED headlights, except for the base 5-seater J variant that has halogen headlamps.
The Toyota Avanza is available in the following colors: White, Beige Metallic, Silver Mica Metallic, Gray Metallic, Black Metallic, and Dark Blue SE. The range-topping Veloz is exclusively available in Dark Red Mica Metallic.
Interior
The Avanza’s interior gears towards being utilitarian rather than class. It has plenty of hard plastics while seats are upholstered with fabric. However, the seats are configurable in many ways, which makes the Avanza a great choice for a family car. There are also several cubbyholes inside the car and more than a handful of cupholders—17 to be exact.
Air conditioning is taken care of by a manual type A/C while the rear cabin gets roof-mounted A/C vents.
Safety
All variants of the Toyota Avanza get the same safety features. Dual airbags are found up front, while the other passengers have 3-point seatbelts. The MPV also comes with side door impact beams, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat tethers.
The latest version of the Avanza hasn’t been tested by ASEAN NCAP, but the pre-facelift version gets 4 stars in adult protection and 38% on child protection.
