Hyundai Motor Company takes another step forward in terms of technological development as they introduced a do-it-yourself software upgrade for smartphone integration. The Korean automaker said that owners of some 2015, 2016, and 2017 Hyundai models can add the software for free.

To complete the software upgrade, Hyundai owners need their VIN number and a USB memory stick or the SD card from their navigation system. has installation guides to walk customers through the process. Hyundai adds that in the near future, consumers will have access to do-it-yourself installation videos.

"Launching smartphone integrations on these existing models through MyHyundai will enhance the overall ownership experience," said Barry Ratzlaff, executive director, digital business planning and connected operations, Hyundai Motor America.

He also emphasized that just a few years ago, getting this powerful upgrade meant that you need to get a new car. Now, you just need to update your software online for free, and follow the installation guide at

The software upgrade for the Apple CarPlay would allow drivers to make calls, get directions, listen to music, and access messages - all eyes-free thanks to Siri who will respond to requests via voice commands which can be accessed by a button on the steering wheel.

Using the Lightning connector, the Apple Carplay works with iPhone 5 and newer models running the iOS 7.1 or higher.

On the other hand, the software upgrade for the Android Auto is integrated with advanced driving-related functions such as the centralized screen, physical controls, and the microphones of the car. If  Android Auto is in use, the smartphone’s screen is locked in order to prevent the driver from looking at and using their phones.

Moreover, Android Auto will recognize familiar Android phone apps such as Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, phone calling, and Google Play Music. These apps can be controlled by voice, steerng wheel controls, and touchscreens.

The compatible Hyundai models for the upgrade are the following: 2015 Sonata with navigation; 2016 Sonata with 7-inch touchscreen and 8-inch navigation; 2015 and 2016 Genesis with 8-inch touchscreen navigation system and rearview camera; 2016 Elantra GT; 2016 Tucson with navigation; 2017 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport with 7-inch touchscreen display and 8-inch navigation.

This is not the first time that a software upgrade has been made available via Last year, Android Auto was offered to owners of 2015 Sonata equipped with navigation package.

There are no reports as to when Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), the official local distributor of Hyundai vehicles, will bring the upgrades locally. But when they do, it will be great for the current Hyundai owners and those who are planning to buy one soon.
