Toyota New Zealand has just released a new variant of the popular Toyota Hilux. The new variant of the Japanese pickup now comes with a special upgrade package. Dubbed the Mako package, aptly named after the mako shark, the package comes with both aesthetic upgrades as well as functional ones. The only catch to this Ranger Raptor challenger is that there will only be 250 units made and it will only be available in New Zealand. In charge of making these limited edition pickups will be Toyota’s New Zealand division, where they will handle the production in their local factory.

The Mako package brings to the table a suspension lift kit that raises the Hilux up by 40mm at the front and 50mm at the rear. Adjustable dampers have also been added to the vehicle giving it superb off-road capabilities for a variety of terrain. Toyota New Zealand has also added steel bumpers front and rear as well as braided brake lines for better durability. An LED light bar has also been added as well as stylized fender flares, and bash plates for better protection.

On the inside, Toyota has made sure your passengers know what you are driving as special Mako badges have been embossed into the vehicle’s leather seats. Aside from that the limited edition Hilux still retains the same features and cabin design as its regular version.

Under the hood, there have been no major upgrades done to the Hilux. It still comes powered by a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine that produces 201hp and 500 Nm of torque. That puts the vehicle at a bit of power deficit compared to its competitor the Ranger Raptor. For comparison, the Blue Oval pickup comes powered by a much smaller 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine that produces 210hp and 500 Nm of torque.
While it's unfortunate that it is a limited edition variant and will only be sold in New Zealand, it would be nice to see a beefed-up local version of the Mako making its way into the Philippine market.
