Did you know that sounds can affect our emotional response? Basically, our five senses are connected and determine how we react to certain things. And Ford had this in mind when they created the new active valve performance exhaust on the 2019 EcoBoost® that will be equipped in the Mustang. To better understand this, let’s travel back in time, shall we?
Our ancestors learned to respond quickly to loud and powerful sounds like the roar of a lion or the crash of a tree that resonated in their surroundings. As time went by, this reaction to a perceived harmful event, or fight-or-flight response, was passed down to our DNA and is now stuck in our minds and bodies.
Years later, Friedrich Marpurg, a music critic back in the 18th century, was among the first in modern times to recognize different sounds and emotional responses people make because of it. Come to think of it, even the notification sound of smartphones is not just a mere sound, but it was designed to be pleasant and happy. It really does make us happy, right? Unless it’s your alarm that’s ringing.

Putting this psychological reference into consideration, audio designers at the Ford Motor Company had come up with an idea to create acoustic exhaust sounds that aim to electrify the senses and show off great performance. They also intend to produce sounds that will hit the desire of both power and thrill.
Moreover, the blue oval brand’s sound engineers use computational analysis to generate a computer-controlled active exhaust system capable of opening valves. Similar to a saxophone, this system will then be able to change the sound of the car based on the driver’s mood.
Ford also claims that once you step on the gas of the 310-hp Mustang EcoBoost, its new exhaust produces a throaty rumble that will give you goosebumps, just like the larger-engine Mustang GT and Shelby GT350 models
Ford Mustang’s new fully active performance exhaust will be available for the 2019 2.3-liter EcoBoost-powered pony car when US hits the summer season.
