Toyota has hit another milestone as its popular crossover the RAV4 has sold over 10 million units worldwide as of February 2020. The Japanese crossover originally made its way to the Philippines back in 1994. It was first introduced with a 3-door body style but due to popular demand, a 5-door version soon followed. From then on the RAV4 has cemented itself as a popular choice for Filipino buyers and as a mainstay model in Toyota’s local lineup.
The RAV4 nameplate continues to surprise as its sales from 2019 put the vehicle close to 1 million units sold. The exact figure comes in at 965,760 with 535,000 out of that total amount coming from the North American market. With impressive figures, it's no wonder that the RAV4 is the world’s best-selling crossover and the fourth best-selling passenger vehicle overall.
However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic not yet reaching a climax the model’s continued sales could be in trouble. Factories and dealerships have temporarily shut down in the interest of public health and safety. The move has consequently lowered the ability of the Japanese car manufacturer to produce vehicles and generate sales as quarantines have also been put into place hampering the movement of the buying public.
Despite the pandemic, Toyota is still pushing forward with its crossover giving it better fuel-saving technology with each new generation. The Japanese brand even has plans to release a RAV4 Hybrid Prime variant soon that can hit 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds. This will make it the second quickest vehicle in Toyota’s global lineup only being beaten by the Supra.
With impressive sales figures already under its belt, the RAV4 is well on its way to being one of the best selling vehicles of all time. It still, however, has a lot of catching up to do if the nameplate wants to beat out its older brother the Corolla which has a 34 million unit sales lead above the much younger crossover.
