The Mazda MX-5 has been a crown jewel for the Japanese marque for its beauty, simplicity, and impressive performance that easily made it a classic. However, reports say that the next generation roadster will be lighter than ever through the use of Carbon Fiber (CF) in its body.
As reported by Autocar, the MX-5 program manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto said that the 5th generation MX-5 will more likely have the same body size of its predecessor. To make the sports coupe lighter, Mazda engineers are now developing a smaller 3-cylinder engine block.
Besides that, they are also delving into the territory of using CF parts in the MX-5’s body construction – a move that they haven’t done before even with the other Mazda vehicles. One of the challenges keeping this idea at bay is that the material is relatively expensive today. That’s why Mazda is now working on a more affordable variant of CF to make this dream possible.
As for the powerplant, Yamamoto assured fans of the MX-5 that power won’t be an issue as long as the car is lightweight. Moreover, the reduction of weight can make the car more fuel efficient as well. This is good news since fuel economy is a big factor in buying cars these days.
The fact that some parts of the 5th generation Mazda MX-5 will be made out of CF puts questions on how much it would affect its price. But since this sports coupe isn't due until 2021, there's still a lot of time for prices of CF parts production to drop by then. While we wait for that, we can all enjoy the current MX-5 which is already available locally.
