China’s NIO EP9 electric supercar packs 1,360 hp

Chinese electric car company, NextEV, recently launches NIO, a sub brand under its umbrella. This brand new name came with its first electric supercar called EP9 – and it’s not just any ordinary electric car.

The NIO EP9 is claimed to be the world’s fastest electric supercar, beating lap records on both Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany and Circuit Paul Ricard in France. The new electric supercar lapped the 20.8 km German track in 7m 05.12s, while setting the French circuit ablaze in 1m 52.78s. Both lap times superseded the record held by an electric vehicle on the mentioned tracks.

To give you an idea how fast that was, the previous record by an electric car in Nürburgring was set by a Mercedes-AMG SLS, which recorded a lap time of 7m 56.23s in 2013.

Today we launched our electric supercar that broke the record at the Nordschliefe. The NIO EP9 was born to push limits and is the first stage of automotive production for NIO. It is a statement of our vision and technical and manufacturing capabilities.

Powering the NIO EP9 are 4 high-performance motors with individual gearboxes. Altogether, it has a maximum output of 1,360 hp, which makes it capable of reaching 200 km/h in just 7.1 seconds. It also has a maximum speed of 313 km/h.

With its intricately designed exterior and record-breaking performance, the NIO EP9 is definitely a supercar, albeit, powered by an interchangeable battery system. The power source can be fully charged in 45 minutes and has a range of 427 kilometers.

Meanwhile, inside the EP9 is an integrated e-control system layout that could fit autonomous driving technology in the future.

Lastly, the EP9 has a carbon cockpit and chassis that can handle the demands of a car with 3G cornering capabilities. It’s also claimed to have structural solidity and aero efficiency, achieving 24,000 Newtons of downforce at 240 km/h.

Unfortunately, the NIO EP9 won’t be something you’ll see everyday on the road as only 6 of its kind will be built for China next year.
