In the world of American muscle cars, few nameplates are as successful as the Ford Mustang. But add the words Shelby to any Mustang and you know it’s something very special. In this case, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is the ultimate expression of the Mustang so far, punching out power figures that go head to head with the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat (717 hp) and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (755 hp). Just how much power? In a short press release by Ford, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will feature the most powerful production supercharged V8 in the world, and the handbuilt 5.2L engine makes an eye-watering 760 hp and 847 Nm of torque.
Performance estimates for the new GT500 put it at zero to 100 km/h in under three seconds and a quarter mile time of less than 11 seconds. A seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox handles the power transfer to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber driveshaft. The supercharger itself is 2.65L inverted roots-type that sits on top of the engine with an air-to-liquid intercooler. The tweaked internals, such as an aluminum alloy block, high flow cylinder heads, and large forged connecting rods, help generate so much power.
Power is nothing without control, so the Shelby GT500 also comes with adaptive dampers with unique Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Brembo brakes with 420mm rotors and six-piston calipers handle stopping duties. Two performance options exist for the Shelby GT500; a handling package that has adjustable strut top mounts and a spoiler with a gurney flap, and a carbon fiber track package that features 20-inch carbon fiber wheels with stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, an adjustable carbon fiber wing, revised areo in the form of splitters, and a rear seat delete.
Why was Ford keeping this engine and its power figures under wraps for quite some time? We can only speculate, but if you want to see the car in action, it has been confirmed that the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will appear at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
