Nissan has announced a new technology that will drive the upcoming LEAF forward – literally. The Japanese automaker aims to simplify driving experience by integrating a car with a 1-pedal feature. Soon, we may find our grandchildren alienated after seeing a car with 3 pedals in it.
Named as the e-Pedal, the system allows 1 pedal to carry the job of the traditional 2 or 3 pedals found in automatic and manual vehicles. In short, drivers can brake and accelerate by using only a foot.
So how does it work? The idea is simple, apply pressure to go forward, ease off to slow down, and release to stop. This can be toggled on and off by flipping a switch located on the center console. In addition, driving up a hill will be an easier task as the system can also hold the car stagnant on inclined roads – no more pulling any handbrake levers.
With the thought of drivers not having to shift a foot between multiple pedals, the stress they get from hours of traffic jam may lessen by having both feet relaxed.
