Aside from electric vehicles, the other trend that’s picking up these days is the hexagonal grille. Toyota is joining that bandwagon with the refreshed 8th generation Hilux in Thailand.
Known as Hilux Revo (Revolution) in Thai market, the midsize pickup truck gets a new face after rolling for 2 years on the all-new platform. This is part of the lifestyle pickup truck trend that changed the way people see these fairly huge machines.
As mentioned, the most prominent change in the Hilux is the chromed hexagonal grille. There are also revamped meshed lower grille and new fog lamp housings to complete the facelift. All other aesthetic elements remain for the Hilux and that includes the interior layout.
The Hilux’s new face came from its American counterpart, the Tacoma. However, it’s whole exterior design is still not as imposing as the US-only model. Still, the refreshed Hilux can stand side-by-side with it and be proud of its new face.
Of note, though, Thailand gets a new range-topping variant called Hilux Rocco. This top-of-the-line trim gets blacked-out chromes, front bumper diffusers, fender claddings, and sporty roll bars — exterior traits that can make the locally-available Nissan Navara Sport Edition nervous. It can even possibly go head-to-head against the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor, if ever the American truck will have its local debut.
As for the engines, the choices are still the same — 2.4L and 2.8L diesel mills that varies whether you want it 4x2 or 4x4. What’s interesting to see is the 2.7L gasoline variant available in Thailand, which is something that the local Hilux has been stripped off.
With the facelifted Hilux reaching our neighbor, 2 questions arose within our team. Will it reach the country before the dreadful excise tax kicks in? Will we get the range-topper Rocco trim? We guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
