The 2018 Subaru WRX, as with all Subies, is known for its powerful Boxer engine and traction from its symmetrical all-wheel-drive. What could be a better way to show off these qualities than a boring acceleration test? Well, Subaru Canada thought of taking the 0-100 km/h test up a notch by soaking the road in water and covering it with banana peels.
Yes, it does sound like something out of a comic skit but they are as serious as they can be. (wink)
Most car manufacturers do acceleration tests under the best conditions to give us the best ratings, so why not bananas? Well, because Subaru Canada can. This tropical fruit has a slippery underside, which under the right conditions, can make a person—or in this case, a car—lose traction. Tough luck, but the WRX did pretty well.
The WRX can reach 100 km/h from complete standstill in just 5.4 seconds. Under the fruity conditions, on the other hand, it was able to gather the grip to do it in 6.1 seconds. That’s a 0.7 second difference. It’s amazing what a damp road and a truck-load of banana peels can do to a car’s acceleration – or how little its effect is on Subaru's power ensemble.
This video is part of Subaru Canada’s atypical tests for the 2018 WRX. If you’re interested to know how this sports sedan fared against wet asphalt, runway foam, gravel, sand and snow, watch the rest of the video series below.
