The Italian brand Brembo, better known for its high-quality car and motorcycle braking components and systems, wants to put a stop to the spread of the COVID-19 virus by donating 1 million Euros to Italian health services in order to fast track a cure. The brand normal does research into braking technology for performance brands such as Porsche and BMW, however, with the onset of the pandemic, it has shifted gears towards finding a cure.
The company’s headquarters is located in the city of Bergamo in northern Italy. The location of the building is just a few miles north of Milan. The city is one of the hardest-hit areas in Italy amid the pandemic due to it being the second-most populous city in the country. With the hospitals in the area nearing capacity, it's not hard to understand why Brembo wants to help find a cure quickly. The country has already recorded over 183,955 cases with 24,648 deaths, and 51,600 recoveries. With still many cases yet to recover finding a cure has become paramount for Italy.
The money that Brembo has donated will be shared amongst three facilities that specialize in clinical and pharmacological research. These three facilities are Fondazione per la Ricerca Ospedale di Bergamo foundation, Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital, and the Mario Negri Institute. These three facilities are located in Italy’s Lombardy region, one of the worst affected areas hit by the pandemic.
After an initial donation to a nursing home at the Bergamo hospital, we needed to do our own research to find a drug for COVID-19 as soon as possible, Research is also the art in which we see ourselves as a company. We believe that it is the payment method to find a future solution to this important situation
The Director of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research also chimes in by stating that “At the present time it is vitally important to understand the mechanisms of the action of the virus within an organism. Thanks to the generous donation received from Brembo, we are convinced that progress will soon be made, in terms of identifying the damages caused by the virus, thus reducing the number of patients needing intensive care”.
With Brembo’s donation, the brand intends to set an example by supporting the search to find a cure. The brand further hopes that it will encourage other enterprises to follow its lead so that a speedy and adequate solution will be found for the ongoing pandemic.
