Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to build not only structurally sound, but also aesthetically pleasing national bridges, with the issue of Bridge Aesthetic Guidelines.

In Department Order No. 49 ordered by DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, he stated that its important to consider the structural appearance of the bridges, as it should serve not just a mere public utility but as an important element in the environment as well.

“With the union of three aspects namely: Science, Aesthetics, and Technology, we will come up with excellent bridge designs that will enhance the beauty and character of our future landmark structures.”

In the updated Bridge Aesthetic Guidelines, architectural details will be added in the conceptual and design stages, which include the drafts of schematic 3D designs.

Aside from that, the DPWH chief also proposed to develop all historical bridges, with the approval from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHPC).

Strategically, these aesthetically designed bridges could serve as landmarks and could be a great help on increasing tourism and promoting better socio-economic development in the country.
