A new class of subcompact cars is in the rage these days. These entry-level sedans are meant to be economic – both in operating costs and out-of-the-showroom value – and are targeted towards first-time car buyers and those who are looking to buy their first car.
However, these cars’ relatively small price tags don’t necessarily mean that it’s okay to skimp out on features. Car companies have been pretty great in adding tech and convenience features in their vehicles, even with their entry-level nameplates. Case in point – the 2018 Suzuki Dzire.
Here’s a closer look at the range-topping Dzire GL+’s technology and safety features to see if it matches its P698,000 sticker price.
Healthy on tech
You’ll be surprised to see features in the Dzire that you’d normally find in bigger and pricier cars. These features include the one-touch lane changer, power-adjustable side mirrors, power windows with auto up/down for the driver, multi-information display in between the analog gauges, and a huge seven-inch infotainment display that has iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. The latter is easy to familiarize with and has huge icons that those with bad eyesight would definitely love.
But don’t expect an iOS type of response from this touchscreen head unit – it lags sometimes especially when using the offline navigation system. Sound isn't the best, as well, but it's decent for pop music. Nevertheless, the presence of volume knobs is certainly appreciated. There are two 12V power outlets, too, which can be found in the center console and at the back, under the rear air-conditioning vents.
Amidst these conveniences, the Dzire lacks a feature that I always look for in cars – speed-sensing door locks. The door locks are centralized but they won’t automatically close as the car catches speed, which is a simple yet very convenient feature.
You’ll also be surprised to know that the Dzire GL+ doesn’t have a rear parking camera, which could have been a great complement to its humungous infotainment system. It doesn’t have rear parking sensors as well, so you better know how to park in reverse if you decide to buy this car.
Standard safety
Even as a small sedan, the Dzire has a standard number of safety features that go with its price tag. Dual front SRS airbags lead the way, then you’ll also get seatbelt reminders for both the driver and front passenger. The car also comes with ABS with EBD, brake assist, ISOFIX child seat tethers, and side-impact door beams. Its front fascia, on the other hand, is designed to absorb impact to avoid pedestrian head and leg injuries in case of an accident.
Security is taken care of an alarm and engine immobilizer. Of note, these safety and security features are standard in both MT and GL+ variants.
