Ford to launch Mustang hybrid in 2020

Ford Motor Company confirmed that hybrid versions of the Mustang and the F150 will enter production. However, we may have to wait for 3 more years before this materializes, which includes creating other electric vehicles (EV) for the U.S.

The confirmation came with the announcement of cancelling the $1.6 billion Mexico plant investment. Ford seems to go all-in on expanding the American plants – particularly in manufacturing EVs, including the Mustang and the F150 hybrids. Great reinforcement for the American marque, considering their latest development in electric and self-driving vehicles.

Expected to launch in 2020, the F150 hybrid will be manufactured in the Ford World headquarters in Dearborn, while the electrified Mustang is set to be produced at the Flat Rock Assembly plant – both in Michigan.

As more and more consumers around the world become interested in electrified vehicles, Ford is committed to being a leader in providing consumers with a broad range of electrified vehicles, services and solutions that make people’s lives better,” said Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO.

Although there are no in depth details yet, the Mustang hybrid model is said to deliver V8 power with low-end torque. On the other hand, the upcoming F150 hybrid truck will operate as a mobile generator (presumably a charging machine?), along with its powerful towing and payload capacity. Both hybrids will be powered by EcoBoost engines.

On the other hand, Ford also confirmed production of more electric vehicles for the U.S. market. This includes a Europe-engineered Transit Custom plug-in hybrid, which will be available in 2019.

In addition, mass production of autonomous vehicles for commercial ridesharing is set to arrive in 2021, primarily targeting North America as its initial market.

Lastly, Ford is set to produce an all-new fully electric small SUV by 2020. This is said to have the capability to go as far as 483 km in 1 full charge. Best part of it? It’s planned to be sold in North America, Europe, and Asia.
