The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) apprehended 162 motorcycle riders on the first implementation day of the Motorcycle Lane Policy.
As of 5 p.m. yesterday, the MMDA said that 129 violators were apprehended on EDSA and 24 along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. On the other hand, 7 violators were recorded on Macapagal Boulevard while 2 in C5 Road.
On this note, motorcycle riders are reminded to wear proper attire, which consists a crash helmet, long pants, and a pair of shoes. A fine of P500 to P2,000 will be charged to motorists who will violate the policy. The Motorcycle Lane Policy requires motorcycle riders to only use the fourth lane from the sidewalk, or the "blue lane" in EDSA.
The policy is strictly implemented following the data gathered by various agencies. Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) reported that 30 of the daily average 265 vehicular accidents in Metro Manila involve motorcycle riders. The Road Crash Statistical Report, on the other hand, tallied a total of 7,033 motorcycle incidents from January to April 2016, where 82 cases was tagged as fatal.
I-ACT is composed of the Department of Transportation, MMDA, Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation Office, and Land transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
