How would you picture the Mazda MX-5 a quarter of a century from now? That’s a question worth answering with a burst of creativity as Mazda Philippines recently launched the “MX-5 Roadster Design Competition” to challenge and bring out the artistic potentials of future Filipino automotive and industrial designers.
In partnership with the National Council of Industrial Design (NCID), this contest invites design students with a burning passion for automotive creativity to come up with a masterpiece that depicts the iconic Japanese sports car’s design for the next 25 years.
We have always believed in the innate talent and skill of Filipinos and this competition will highlight just that. We would like to see how local designers will be able to capture the essence of the Miata and interpret this into a design that will stand the test of time,” said Mazda Philippines President and CEO Mr. Steven Tan.
This contest is open to participants 18 years old and above with a valid Filipino citizenship and updated passport. They must be enrolled under NCID or any of its affiliated courses, programs, colleges, and universities. They also must compete as a group of 3 students plus 1 mentor.
Only 1 entry is allowed for each participating team. The entry should contain an exterior and an interior design concept. It must be submitted as a PDF file format (1.3 version or higher) with a maximum file size of 150 MB. All images contained in the PDF must be in landscape orientation only, must be high-resolution of at least 300 dpi, must be 3D CAD models, and must be rendered in CMYK format.
Also, the entry should contain a brief description of how the group interprets the future design of the MX-5 as a “2-seat open-top light-weight sports car” and its technologies. All entries must be submitted on or before July 31, 2015 though sherlyn.co@mazda.ph and maricar.delacruz@mazda.ph.
The panel of judges will comprise of Berjaya Auto Philippines (BAP) and National Council of Industrial Design representatives, Top Gear Philippines Editor-in-Chief Vernon Sarne, and the 1st gen Mazda Miata Chief Designer Mr. Tom Matano.
The winning team will be announced on August 8, 2015 at the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde. The winners will be in for a treat as Mazda Philippines will take them on a trip to Hiroshima, Japan to visit the Mazda HQ and Museum.
