Renault-Nissan, Mitsubishi to share platform and engine by 2022

Last year, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. acquired 34% stake of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. Now, the 2 brands announced another business move (and a new logo) to solidify their partnership.

Along with Renault, they formed Alliance 2022 — a 6-year strategic accord by the 3 carmakers to increase revenue and productivity by the year 2022.

Alliance 2022 includes a bold move to have 9 million units from the 3 brands share 4 platforms and engines. The midsize segment platform will be the first to be shared, the same as what Nissan and Renault have been sharing since their original partnership. Mitsubishi, on the other hand, will be able to access the shared platform and engine by 2020.

This means we’ll probably see a Navara-based Strada pickup truck (or vice versa) in the years to come. We’re not sure if which one is better, but if parts and services between the 3 will also be shared, that will be a win-win situation for the consumers.

The target of the Alliance 2022 is 14 million units, as they are seeing this as their total annual sales by the end of the 6-year plan, which is equivalent to $240 billion (around P12 trillion). To achieve this, the sharing of platform and power mills isn’t the only key.

As hinted by the return of Mitsubishi PHEV that was announced early this year, Alliance 2022 is on a mission to strengthen its electric vehicle technologies, as well as the development and deployment of advanced autonomous driving systems, vehicle connectivity, and new mobility services.

Of note, the Alliance also promises 12 new all-electric vehicles to be introduced by 2022. In addition to that, 40 cars will debut with different levels of self-driving technology. As for mobility, ride-hailing services that use automated robo-vehicles will be developed.
