The reign of combustion engine is full of uncertainty as more countries are opting to shift to electric-powered cars in the future. Moreover, car manufacturers are on a race to develop their respective electric vehicles (EVs).
As such, the Philippines is preparing itself for the future of mobility by exploring the potential of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the country. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), along with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), are teaming up to study and promote EVs in the country.
This joint study was part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MMC and DENR that was signed last February 2017. Under the MoU, MMC and DENR will collaborate on projects addressing environmental concerns.
With that in mind, MMC turned over 5 units of the Outlander PHEVs and 5 i-MiEVs to the DENR during the opening day of the 1st ASEAN Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Summit last June 2017. The said units were to be used to determine the capability of EVs in reducing CO2 emissions. In addition, MMC handed over 4 electric vehicle (EV) quick charger to the DENR during the said summit. Now, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) is preparing for the construction of EV quick charging stations. These charging stations will be placed in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao.
Although, MMPC has yet to announce the exact locations of the EV charging stations they wish to install. The unveiling of the EV quick charging stations is set between October to November of this year.
