Ford has recently started the production of a new transmission option for its Transit minibus. The people mover now comes with the option of a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The transmission is similar to those found on the Everest, Ranger, and Ranger Raptor locally. With the addition of the new transmission, Ford states that driving the vehicle will become an easier experience thanks to its many gear ratios.
Speaking of ratios, with 10 gears to choose from the new transmission according to Ford promises to make the engine operate more efficiently, always being near or at its peak torque range. It will in turn give the vehicle a more responsive feel as well as providing the driver with better driving experience. Thanks to its many gears the transmission can easily adapt to changing conditions. It can easily swap between gears offering performance and fuel efficiency at the same time. A variable vane pump has also been added to the minibus which is said to reduce parasitic losses and improves on power delivery. Together with the 10-speed automatic, the American automaker states that it makes for smoother acceleration.
It is important to note that in other markets the Ford Transit comes with a more powerful 2.0-liter EcoBlue turbo-diesel engine that makes 167hp. The Blue Oval states that the 10-speed automatic transmission is capable of operating vehicles with a weight of between 3,500kg to 4,600kg. Thanks to the Transit’s versatile chassis the 10-speed automatic transmission can also be applied to different body styles such as chassis cab, minivan, and van.
Of note, the Philippine spec Transit comes powered by a 2.2-liter turbo diesel motor similar to that found in the mid to entry-level Ford Ranger. While the engine works well for the platform locally it is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Ford Philippines has yet to confirm it will be bringing in an automatic version of the minibus soon, however, if it were to bring in the 10-speed automatic transmission for the vehicle it might have to put in the 2.0-liter EcoBlue motor as well as to further maximize efficiency.
